JAWS

Jaws opens with a medium shot of a lady running into the see. She is shown to be wearing very little which connotes adult themes. The soundtrack at this time is fairly happy and cheerful.

There is then a long shot of the sea looking very calm and relaxed. This makes the audience feel rather tense as you know something scary is about to happen. There is then a close up shot of the lady in the sea looking excited and happy. This is also unusual due to the type of film we are watching.

There is then a low angle shot of the lady swimming with really clear water. This makes me feel like a shark is about to appear. The soundtrack is still calming and relaxing which makes the audience feel there will be a change in tune soon. There is a following camera movement as the actor carries on to swim.

When the actor stops swimming there is a dolly zoom low angle moving towards the character. This looks like there is something watching her and about to attack from beneath.

As the soundtrack speeds up creating a more tense environment, there is a close up shot showing the lady in fear and being dragged down. She looks as if she is struggling to stay above sea level. You then begin to hear laughing suggesting her boyfriend is playing tricks on her. This will make the audience feel less threatened but expecting a jump soon.

At the end of the opening scene there is a close up of the lady going

underwater and not coming back up. The long shot showing the sea calm and relaxed suggests she had been attacked slowly and carefully.

Meet The Characters:

OUR CHARACTERS

This is one of our characters Ellie. She's the protagonist's friend and is shows to be innocent and not involved with the assault scene. She is only shown in the coffee shop awaiting Tara's presents however as she doesn't turn up you see Ellie in a way you wouldn't expect.
This is our protagonist Tara. She is also presented as innocent by what she is doing and by what she is wearing. She is a relatable character as she is shown walking her dog looking normal and not suspicious. In this picture she is shown with a plastic bag on her head, this prop was used to 'suffocate' Tara as we wanted our thriller to appear different than a usual gun shooting killing scene.
This is our antagonist Rosemary, she is shown dressed in all black and a balaclava. She is hiding her identity throughout until she reveals that she is the person who took part in the assault. The darkness connoted mystery, suspicion and murder. She's also very secretive as she decides to keep the assault a secret and not talk about it to anyone but her sidekick.
This is the antagonist sidekick Bella. She is presented to look quite innocent but has dark secrets hidden inside her. The red coat tries to connote blood and murder. Bella didn't take part in the assault but she's helping Rosemary keep it a secret. This is an evil and twisted action by our sidekick.

Props In Filming:

PROPS

In our opening two minutes we had props which included Nadiye's dog Jasper, Balaclava, plastic bag to film the assault scene, coffee cup and a Iphone. We used these props as we felt they help make our opening scene appear better and more captivating. It makes it interesting and not boring.

We used the dog to help make the film appear realistic and suggest the character was on a dog walk. The audience are then able to relate to this as if it was a normal day. It fits well as the opening two minutes is set in the woods, an environment where dog walking is normal and ordinary.

The plastic bag was used when filming the assault scene. We decided to suffocate the protagonist as we felt it was different and not a thriller stereotype. We wanted to avoid gun shots and knife slashing as it would be to cliche. However for health and safety reasons we put a hole in the bag to ensure our actor could breathe and wasn't restricted from air!

The balaclava, this was worn by our antagonist to keep their identity hidden. We wanted to leave the audience in suspense, so when the antagonist was revealed it would be a surprise. The colour of the balaclava was black as well as the rest of the antagonist outfit to connote mystery, suspicion and death.

The coffee cup is used to help make the film look realistic and relatable. Part of the scene is set in a coffee shop to show where friends would meet up ordinarily. We thought we should buy the drink to help show where we were and why we were there. Our main aim of this prop is to look relatable to the audience so they can see that its just a normal place to meet up.

The IPhone was used throughout filming to give information to the audience. We used it when Ellie was trying to contact Tara but wasn't successful. Your able to realise that she isn't answering and seems to be missing. At the end of the opening two minutes Ellie receives a text message on the phone and leaves everyone in suspicion. We used it as its an item when teenagers use everyday.

Analysing Thriller Opening Titles

This title from the film Taken 3, is interesting as its block capitals and the colour is grey. The block capitals stand out and look powerful which is how a thriller film would like to be represented as. The 3 replacing the E helps show that it's the third film in the trilogy giving away more information. The colour of the 3 is red to connote death, murder, blood and suspense. All in which is included in a thriller film.

This title is from the film American Psycho. Its black capitals with red lining on the letters. This connotes blood, murder and death. The title also takes your eye as the black is quite thick and interesting. The blood splats in the background also help represent the film as thriller as it would immediately make you think of murder/killings including knife slashes. I like this one as the font is quite ordinary by font and colour, but the blood splats make it more captivating and make the film appear more exciting.

This title is from the film Orphan. The fonts looks like it has been engraved by a knife or written by a child. The white looks like bright lights which make it look more captivating. Half of the tile is in capitals an half is small letters. This could be to connote a child writing as they would be learning how to write accurately. The font also looks quite sharp or smudged.
