The First Two Minutes of Divergent

Divergent is a Sci-Fi action film based in a fictional word where society is divided between five factions. 

The scene opens with an establishing shot of what looks like fences, suggesting that the fictional word has been blocked away from the real word. This could be due to war and conflict on the other side? 

Eleven seconds into the scene there is another effective establishing shot of a run down looking city. My personal viewpoint is that it looks like there had previously been a war there and that it looks rather abandoned. However as i kept watching it shows that there are many residents to the city.

The use of the music in the background gives a mysterious look of the film and really grabs my attention. It made me want to carry on watching to see what happens. 

The use of the birds eye view moving through the city is effective as it gives you an insight of what is to come and what the setting is like.

Thirty nine seconds in there is a long shot starting to introduce residents to the city. You are able to see the different outfits which automatically leads you to believe there is some sort of divide between society. I feel this is effective as it makes you want to understand more about their way of life. Theres  a follow camera movement which is following the characters as you are becoming focussed on them. 

You then start to hear a voice of who you would think is the main character. You begin to understand more about the film about want to carry on watching it as she speaks in a way which gains your attention and draws you into it completely. 

The use of the track movement showing the factions is effective as it gives you an insight to their lives and shows how the film works. The factions are the main subject and giving a brief overview works really well in the opening scene. 

The medium shot and tracking movement when focussing on 'Dauntless' is effective as it shows it to be thrilling and exciting. The other factions may come across as boring to some people because they aren't as risk taking and adventurous as Dauntless. There is a birds eye view of them climbing a very tall building suggesting they are brave and not scared of anything. This makes you feel the film will become very captivating and compelling.

There is an extreme close up of two people holding hands. This demonstrates that the film won't just be action and adventure there will also be feelings and emotion in the film.

I feel the opening scene to Divergent is super engaging and interesting. It made me want to carry on watching and find out what would happen. The use of the camera shots and movements work really well in grabbing your attention. Overall, the film is brilliant and would highly recommend it and the others in the Trilogy.
